what's he famous for again? Boys Gone Wild?
It’s real funny to me that just two weeks ago, everyone was all up in arms that Bruno gave Michael Bolton a 3 for his terrible jive, but they handed out a bunch of 4s this week like candy — well-earned candy. It was week four, so maybe that’s why. Now the standings are looking more secure about who is going to go the distance, it’s a matter of weeding out the bottom of the pack and seeing who in the middle might get a fire lit under them as the dead weight falls away. Last night Bristol Palin was in the bottom two again, but escaped again. For awhile, I was batting a thousand this week, correctly predicting the judges’ score spread for each dance (two scores were given – one for technical, one for overall performance), and even correctly predicting who would be safe and who would be in the bottom two. But in the last second, I hedged and thought Bristol, even though she had actually improved, might be saying goodbye. Nope, I choked — it was time for The Situation to return to Jersey Shore. Which, when I think back to his dance, why did I predict anyone else would be the one to go? It was really terrible!
Despite my love for Derek Hough as a choreographer and performer, I’m still not sold on Jennifer Grey — even though it seems sort of inevitable she’s headed towards a career that will be neatly bookended by Dirty Dancing on one side and the mirror ball trophy on the other. So every week, I have to be convinced to cheer for her, but every week, she earns it. Here’s a much better example of an Argentine Tango, which scored the first 10s of the season (even if it was for performance, not technical):
Kyle Massey is still looking like a possible winner to me — he’s a goofball for sure, but he’s 19, and he works hard every week and shows improvement. Dirty-girl Lacey is the perfect match for his youth and enthusiasm and inexperience, so I hope soon he will break out of the 4th place spot he’s been locked into and they will find his way to the top of the pack. I was also glad to see that Brandy finally had her own breakthrough this week and showed what that she is capable herself — I think it helped that she went into the costume rack and pulled out Pamela Anderson’s rumba outfit from last season. She didn’t channel Pamela’s split, but she and Maks made some magic of their own:
Of course, dancing to This Woman’s Work helped. Then again, while the right song choice can certainly elevate a mediocre dance to good status, if your dancing is poor, wasting it on a good song exacerbates that too. I was relieved that Brandy did the song justice.
But the dance that has stayed with me the most this week has to be Florence Henderson’s. Is is Awkward Sexy or just sometimes awkward and sometimes sexy? I couldn’t decide.
The viewers didn’t think it was “NOT appropriate” — she escaped the bottom two. See you next week and possibly beyond, dirty Mrs. Brady!

[Ed. note: Last night I liveblogged DWTS, and I hope to do this most every week, on either Monday or Tuesday. I will always announce it the day of on twitter and facebook and would love others to join me. Thanks to Krista last night for keeping me company!]
